on the Future"

LaChapelle and the late Binx Sandahl.
FORWARDThis volume contains the text of a suite of presentations
given at a Symposium in Little Cottonwood Canyon during April of 1991.
The three goals of the Symposium and this attendent were: To plumb
the depth of opion regarding past efforts and future directions for applied
and basic research in Snow Science, especially as it applies to the questions
of avalanche hazard management, and to honor the efforts of some of the
pioneers in these fields. This Symposium was sponsored by and this
Proceedings volume is published by the Center for Snow Science at Alta.
(CSSA). The Center is a not-for-profit Utah corporation dedicated
to archival and re-issue of classical works in the fields of Snow Science,
technology transfer, and the maintenance and administration of feild study
sites at Alta, Utah; home of America's first snow and avalanche study
center. This is the Center for Snow Science at Alta's inaugural
