We received a report from Steve in Skagway, and have updated and edited it and added details from the White Pass and Yukon Railroad:

Hey Bill,

They had a big slide yesterday... on the railroad... Where we were skiing it was very stable but I could see where slabs had broken and slid in other areas.

Today we talked with Gary Davidson at the White Pass and Yukon Railway. He reports that the no trains were hit, no one was injured, and there was no track damage.

The slide occurred about 6:00 or 6:15 pm yesterday, the 22nd. It was a cornice-triggered slab releasing in late afternoon on a north aspect at the end of the warmest day yet this spring, which fits right in with the pattern we are seeing throughout the region lately.

It was a large slide that left debris estimated to be 350' (100m) wide by 70' (20m) high. Gary said it was the largest slide in about thirty years.

The path was just south of the bridge near Glacier Station, at about 13 and a half mile, north of Skagway.

They were able to clear the track and determine that the starting zone was cleaned out well enough to feel there was no significant remaining threat.
