48 hour weather chart key

These Utah Avalanche Center weather charts show data from the past 48 hours. The data is collected from the National Weather Service who retrieves it from the various automated stations around the Wasatch Range. The most recent data is on the right side of the graphs with older data toward the left in hourly increments. Automated stations require maintenance and are somewhat prone malfunctions for various reasons. This shows up in the data occasionally in the form of missing data, not current data or incorrect data.

Temperatures
The line on the temperature charts indicates the temperature for the given hour in Fahrenheit.

Wind
The dark grey bars on the wind charts indicate the hourly average in mph. The light grey bars indicate the highest gust recorded for the hour in mph. The wind direction is abbreviated with letters on the bottom of the charts.

Precipitation
The line on the precipitation charts indicates the total snow depth from the ground in inches read from the numbers on the left side of the chart. The numbers on the left will change as the total snow depth increases throughout the winter.

The white bars indicate the cumulative amount of new snow since the interval read from the numbers on the right side of the chart. The black bars indicate the cumulative amount of water content of the new snow since the interval (multiplied by ten for ease of graphing) read from the numbers on the right side of the chart. Not all stations have every measurement. Only a few have total snow depth, snow interval and water content.

Intervals at many stations are 12 hours, cleared once in the morning and once in the late afternoon.

Snotel stations
In the charts for the Snotel stations (indicated by “ST” next to the station name), the cumulative water is reset at 7am making a 24 hour interval.
The Snotel sites only have total snow depth along with snow water equivalent with no snow interval. Other sites may only have one or two of the three measurements.
