Important Notice

Due to excessive insurance costs and lack of funding, we are not currently able to offer public courses on our own, but offer a full schedule of courses through other organizations. You should check the course schedule and register directly with the sponsoring organization for your course.

This page is here just in case we get funding in the future to begin offering courses on our own again.

Registration Policies

We have changed our registration policy to encourage early signups so we can do the organizing and preparation we need to do to give you better courses. The discount rate applies to early signups, through December 15. After then, signups up to two weeks in advance are at the regular rate, and signups less than two weeks in advance pay a substantial late registration surcharge. For the best deal, sign up early!

Full payment is required to reserve your space and meet the signup deadlines. We must cancel any courses that fail to meet our minimum signup requirements two weeks in advance.

We have always made our courses available to motivated people with limited funds, though we do have to cover our costs. To get the best rates, sign up early. If a course is still out of reach for you, we trade work on Center projects toward tuition at the rate of $15 per hour. Give us a call to set up a tradeout.

If you’d like to see lower-cost avalanche education available to others, we would welcome your help putting together grants from community groups to subsidize tuition or working for adequate funding for the Center.

Minimum age: You need to be at least thirteen years old to take our field courses. There is no minimum age for classroom sessions.

Checks should be made out to Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center and sent to PO Box 20578 Juneau, AK 99802, or you can arrange to drop them off at our office.

We do not cancel due to weather unless there is no snow at all in our field areas, all trails that access suitable field areas are closed, or the road to our trailhead is impassable. If we have to cancel or reschedule a workshop, you can get a full tuition refund. Otherwise, tuition is nonrefundable unless you find someone to fill your position.

Be sure to read all the information pages for your course. Just follow the links to the information pages, especially the schedule and the precourse information sheets.
