Summary: 1 skier caught, buried, and killed
On Thursday, 3/21/02, volunteers from the Teton County Search and Rescue
team recovered the body of a male skier from avalanche debris. This
backcountry skier was alone and had been in the backcountry since March
9th. The incident occured near Jackson Peak which is approximately six
miles east of Jackson, Wyoming in a wilderness area. The exact time or
date of the event is not known. The avalanche was reported to have been
approximatley 50 yards across and 100 yards in length and 3 to 4 feet
deep at the crown. It occured on a North-northeast aspect at an
elevation of around 9,800 feet. The victim was located by a search dog
after several clues were found on the debris.
