Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, buried, and killed.
A snowmobile fatility occurred in the Greys River on Sunday Jan. 5, 2003 two miles
north of Sheep pass possibly near Corral Creek Lake, hazard was
Considerable, companion rescue attempted but failed, S&R called. The victim
was not wearing a transceiver and the party was not carrying shovels or
probes. The slide occured on a 30+ degree slope, ran on the ground and
buried the victim under four feet of snow. Snowpack in this area consists
of about a foot of faceted snow topped with well developed surface hoar from
a late November dry spell and covered with up to five feet of E.T. snow of
varying hardness between fist and one finger, with the hardest layer being
near the surface due to recent high winds.
Another snowmobiler was seriously injured in an unrelated slide in the Greys
River area on Sunday, more details unavailable at this time.
