Backcountry Avalanche Forecaster for Logan, Utah

The Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center is looking of a qualified
backcountry avalanche forecaster for Logan, Utah. The position involves
doing fieldwork in backcountry avalanche terrain, issuing backcountry
avalanche advisories to the public and teaching avalanche classes to the
public.

The applicant must have excellent avalanche skills, be in excellent
physical condition, be able to travel safely in hazardous backcountry
avalanche terrain on both skis and snowmobiles, be a good public speaker
and writer, have a pleasant personality and work well with others. The
applicant should have a college degree in a technical field such as
meteorology, engineering, geology, geography or computer science, but
experience in place of a degree is acceptable. They must also have at
least the equivalent of a level II avalanche training and demonstrated
practical avalanche experience such as doing avalanche control for a class
A ski area, helicopter guiding or backcountry guiding. Finally, the
applicant must have demonstrated computer skills in most common software
programs such as word processors, spreadsheets and web site maintenance.

This position involves a lot of responsibility and they will often work
alone in producing the avalanche advisory usually after telephone
consultation with other avalanche professionals in the Salt Lake office,
but they should have sufficient avalanche skills to work alone when
necessary.

The Logan program has been operating for about ten years, but the most
recent forecaster has transferred to another office. Logan is a scenic
college town of about 40,000 and the applicant will live in Logan. The
forecasts serve backcountry recreationists, who are primarily snowmobilers
with some skiers. The applicant must be comfortable not only skiing
backcountry avalanche terrain, but riding snowmobiles in the backcountry,
talking with snowmobilers and teaching avalanche classes to snowmobilers.

Pay is a seasonal GS-8, which pays around $15 per hour. It involves 40
hours per week for around six months per season. The job has no health or
retirement benefits, but if reliable, long-term funding is demonstrated,
the position will probably be converted to a permanent position with
benefits. The position is supported by a state grant for motorized
recreation, for which we must compete each season. Although the prospects
look good for regular annual funding, in the short term, we must consider
the job as a year-to-year position.

The position will be open to accept application as soon as the personnel
department processes the paperwork and advertises the position. This
process can take some time but it will probably be in November but could be
as late as January.

Please e-mail a resume to the address below and, more importantly, monitor
the web site (www.usajobs.opm.gov) for job openings. It will probably be
listed as a "meteorological technician." Your resume does not enter you
into consideration for the job. You must also submit an official Forest
Service application, which you must postmark within the specified opening
period. Often the opening period lasts only a week, so the applicants must
monitor the web site regularly. I will try to contact qualified applicants
personally to notify them of the opening but I cannot guarantee it.
