The Manti-La Sal Avalanche Center is located in lovely downtown Moab, Utah . The Center is part of the larger Utah Avalanche Center in Salt Lake City. The UAC has branches in Moab, Salt Lake City and Logan. The Manti-La Sal Avalanche Center is funded by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service and through donations of cash, goods and services by Friends of the Manti-LaSal Avalanche Center (Please click--we need you!). What do we do, you might ask? We provide current backcountry avalanche conditions advisories: The Center collects snow and weather data and distributes frequently
updated avalanche advisories that
are available on this web-site. The advisory is also available in hard-copy
form at the Moab Information Center and local climbing shops, and via
recorded message at:
We provide specific mountain weather forecasts: The Center provides the only available mountain weather, snow and road conditions advisory for the LaSal Mountains. We collect, archive and make snow and weather data available: We maintain a weather station on Pre-Laurel Peak in the La Sal Mountains and another on the Wasatch Plateau. We provide avalanche education to the public: The Center and the Friends sponsor free avalanche education including this web-site. Avalanche Awareness Week in January includes avalanche-related local television programming, avalanche awareness presentations and a basic avalanche class and field session. The MLSAC works with local groups like the Grand and San Juan County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Teams, the Moab Winter Rescue Team and the Mt. Peale Country Resort Inn to bring avalanche training to their members and guests. Contact us if your group is interested. The Center creates and distributes avalanche-related brochures, placemats and printed material through local businesses and information services. We also provide avalanche-related information for local, state and national publications. Have other ideas for partnerships, fund-raising, community education? Send them on! The Center relies heavily on the input and assistance of you, the public--not just your dollars!
