| 02-17 Eaglecrest
Our staff was at the Juneau Access open house and hearings most of the day today, so we only had time for a quick field check at Eaglecrest. We found about 15 - 20 cm of new dry snow on the upper mountain, topped by a breakable rime crust that caught skis a bit in turns. The snow was wetter on the lower mountain, with a variable snow level up to 400+ m. It was riming lightly and calm. There was not enough new snow load to affect any deep layers, and the only slab activity was the new snow sliding off on the older snow beneath, with small slabs less than 5 - 10 m wide and less than 20 cm deep, only releasable with hard ski cuts on slopes over 40 - 45°. The stability is unlikely to change until there is heavy snowfall. Watch the bond of new snow to today's rime crust. |

| Typical upper mountain visibility and snow quality today. The snow is hanging on the trees, but is dry enough that it is difficult to make a snowball from it. | |||||

| The best snow today was on slopes steeper than 40 - 45° on NW aspects, where the rime crust was absent. Riming was ongoing on flatter slopes and all other aspects. | |||||
