The upper crown face near where the avalanche was triggered was only about 6 inches deep and 100' wide. The avalanche was a very hard, wind slab, which broke on a layer of very fine-grained faceted snow. There were only very isolated places where people could have triggered avalanches and this is one of them. The summit of Box Elder Peak is in the background about 200-300 vertical feet above. The upper fracture is at 10,800' in elevation and it faces northeast and the starting zone is about 38 degrees in steepness. It was cross wind loaded from northwest winds during the previous three days.
