This broad avalanche in Upper White Pine Canyon occurred sometime over the weekend of December 16th. The avalanche was about 3 feet deep and several hundred feet across.

The northeast facing slope at around 9500' averages less than 35 degrees, but sections of the slope are steeper.

On the south end of the crown, the 38 degree slope faces almost due north.

On the north edge of the avalanche, the <35 degree slope faces east-northeast.

The avalanche failed on a thin weak layer consisting of sugary or faceted snow.

I'm not sure if someone triggered this one or not, but there are lots of tracks from the weekend on the deposition. Remember, if you see or trigger an avalanche in the backcountry, we want to hear about it.

We keep backcountry observations confidential, and the information you provide may save lives...
