natural avalanche from 2-13-08

Strong winds came around from the east today, drifting snow onto west facing slopes of the Bear River Range front.

An officer from the Cache County Sheriff's Department reported this avalanche that stopped on the flats a few feet from the road near the Green Canyon Gate.  The avalanche on a northwest facing slope ran over 1000' vertical from a crown at around 6300'.

The path avalanched at least once before already this season, and it smoothed out the run-out track allowing for longer running slides.  This wasn't a huge avalanche, but it brought a fair amount of scorched, woody debris way down the gully.  The avalanche probably occurred late in yesterday's tempest on a slope that burned in a 2005 wild-land fire.
