Natural Avalanche from 2-3-08
Toby Weed

I journeyed up to Maple Bench to view recent natural avalanches and came across this view of a large debris pile at the base of Old Logway Canyon. An explosive powder avalanche cleaned out a bunch of big tooth maples and mountain ash at the base of the canyon.

The avalanche ran about 2600 vertical feet, from a crown at 8600' to the toe at 6000' on Maple Bench.

Here's a view of the crown on the south flank of the avalanche. At the time of the avalanche, the crown on an east and southeast facing slope averaged around 3' deep and I estimate it to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 800' wide.  In this part of the crown it looks like the thin culprit weak layer contained well hidden surface hoar or frost crystals.  On the north end, I found well developed depth hoar under a thick sun-crust that might have contributed to the slope's instability.

Here's a look at the newly cleared meadow cloaked with powder avalanche debris.

Here's a view of the devastation at the toe from quite a ways up the path.
