wind slabs from 3-21-08

A nice treat on a beautiful day: from afar we could see this fresh natural wind or persistent slab avalanche on the East Wall of Naomi Peak.

"One at a time" A good lesson for Jade as he examines the fresh debris pile on the second field day of our Avalanche Fundamentals Class

The crown on a northeast facing slope at ~9800' was 1-2' deep and around 200' wide.  The avalanche was probably triggered by cornice fall.  We noticed a reactive weak layer with graupel and small faceted crystals in a few nearby test pits.

After running around 700 vertical feet, the debris set up like concrete.

On our way down we spied this avalanche on an east-southeast facing slope at around 9200', which was probably triggered remotely by a snowmobiler.  We checked the debris with a beacon just in case anyone was trapped.

Interestingly, a couple old tracks are apparent in the bed surface.
