3-7-06, Magog East Face

(Natural soft slab avalanche)

I watched this natural avalanche on the east face of Magog run on 3-7-06.  The soft slab avalanche consisted of new snow from overnight.

The avalanche on a 40+ degree east facing slope at about 9300' was around a foot deep and 100' wide.

Seasonal solar warming caused a wet point-release avalanche, just like this one down near Tony Grove Lake.  The wet sluff overran the steep slope near the summit of Magog and triggered a soft slab avalanche.

The avalanche ran around 500 vertical feet.

Here's a view of a section of the upper crown.  My ski-pole gives scale.
