natural wet sluffs, glide cracks, and dusty snow

We observed many natural wet point-release avalanches, like this one off the south ridge of Cherry Peak, that most likely occurred in very warm conditions on Sunday 4-27-08.

Here's a view of Cherry Peak from the east showing widespread natural wet avalanching.

I noticed these growing glide cracks off the north ridge of Cherry Peak.  The snowpack, lubricated by melt water flowing on rock slabs, will slowly move down slope and may catastrophically fail with continued heating this spring.

Although theses avalanches only involved warmed fresh snow from Thursday 4-24-08, they were sizable, running hundreds of feet and piling up fairly deeply.

This wet avalanche on the east side of Naomi Peak, stepped down into an older drift and buried recent snowmobile tracks below.

For the second time in a week, strong winds spread a layer of dust on the snow surface across the Bear River Range.  This will cause problems this spring.  Expect an uneven and rough snow surface, developing sun-cups, more rapid than usual melt, and potential wet avalanche problems....

Here's a view of the very dusty snow looking northeast down White Pine Canyon.
