Logan Peak 12-23-05

Thursday's storm built-out some big overhanging cornices, like this one on Red Pine Ridge.

We saw a couple rounds of natural avalanching this week in the high country as warm windy storms blasted the local mountains.                                  (Three Terraces, Millville Peak)

From what I could see, this week's avalanches all involved new wind-drifted snow, and none stepped down into old weak layers.

Heavy warm snow blew in on top of last week's cold and re-crystallized fluff. I think we had pretty widespread but small natural avalanches across upper elevations in the region, but most of the evidence was buried by the time I could get back up on Thursday.

Strong ridge top winds rapidly drifted heavy snow into avalanche starting zones.
