Natural Avalanches from 1st week of 2006

Cornice-fall likely triggered this modest size natural avalanche on the east face of Providence Peak, image from 1-6-06.

Outside the active Wellsville Range natural avalanches from overnight 1-2/3-06 were only "pockety."  This one seen from a distance in High Creek Canyon is a couple hundred feet wide. 1-5-06

You can see the crown from this natural avalanche in the upper left of this photo.  The ~300' wide avalanche on the north face of Millville Peak.  I was surprised how far down through the trees it ran.1-6-06

Surface cracking can indicate instabilities. This one, which shot out from my skis, was only a couple inches deep.
