Butler Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon

March 15, 2002

An overview of a human triggered avalanche in Butler Fork. The skier was near the stand of evergreen trees on the ridge when it released.
This avalanche was triggered from a portion of the ridge that was 33 degrees in steepness.
The avalanche was over 350 feet wide and averaged 4 to 6 feet deep.
Side view of the avalanche. The skier was descending the relatively gentle ridge and the snowpack collapsed and cracked all around him. Although the ridge was not steep enough to slide, it propagated on the far side of the ridge and triggered a large avalanche.
